A Gladiator’s Tale (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey)

Here’s a Quest I designed for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey using Odyssey’s Story Creator, a node-editing tool which allows me to implement dialogue, character animation, quest objectives, scripted variables and combat.

Concept

The player has been enslaved and made a gladiator. One day, they are summoned to an audience with their master, Zinaida.

Zinaida says the player has pleased her with their fighting and offers them a chance at freedom: all they must do is escort some of her slaves to a merchant named Xeno in a nearby town and return to her with the gold. To succeed, all of the slaves must arrive alive and intact.

Our hero goes and fetches the slaves, whom they learn is a family with a father named Hechel and his two teenaged daughters, Ava and Kinsha. One of the daughters, Kinsha, seems to have no ability to speak. Ava is contemptuous and critical of the hero. Everything the player does is subjected to her criticism.

On the way to the market, the hero is stopped by burly man on the road, who calls the travelers over for a drink. He quietly offers the hero a large sum for the two girls. The hero must choose: sell the girls or refuse. If the player refuses, the tough man decides to rob him (if the player accepts… They continue on towards Xeno with just Hechel, who is distraught at the loss of his daughters)

They continue on to market. One of the girls being escorted, Ava, takes the hero aside and tells her she believes she can trust them. She asks if the hero will set her family free. If the hero agrees, her father Hechel is outraged and refuses- but Ava remembers that the hero was willing to free them. (This does not happen if the hero sold the two girls, of course)

Our hero reaches the market and finds Xeno. Xeno thanks the hero for their pains and tells them the family of slaves they’ve brought will be fed to the lions in the arena for the entertainment of the crowd. The hero can then accept payment or refuse. If they refuse, then Xeno offers to free the slaves if the hero will go into the arena and fight the lions. If the hero accepts, however, they get Xeno’s gold and return to Zinaida.

If the hero defeats the lions in the arena, they are thanked profusely by the family. The silent daughter, Kinsha, finally speaks and tells the hero they have a good heart.

The hero returns to Zinaida. Based on their decisions on the quest, Zinaida will react in a number of different ways but nonetheless always judges the hero for the choices that they made...
